Constructed landscape
what is a landscape?
What do you see in your mind when you hear the word landscape?
In my mind i see places around the world which look good to take photographs of like mountain ranges, lakes, the coral reef, the city and many more places around the world.
Make a list of the first 10-20 words that pop into your head. What words do we associate with landscape?
Mountains, ocean, cave, cliff, city nature
Do a google image seach for the word landscape

Compare and contrast
Here are some photos of examples in ways in which landscape photos covey particular ideas. Both of these photos looks like the aftermath of a battle with the piles of cannon balls in Roger Fentons photograph and the cowboy with all the smoke in Richard princes photograph. The photo on the left looks quite old as its in black and white and looks like no one has been there for a long time. Whereas, the photo on the right looks colourful with the blue smoke, perhaps the photo is whist a battle is taking place.
dark room work
We are learning about the dark room and how it works as well as looking at work the work by Tanja Deman she makes constructive landscape collages and here is some of her work.
Tanja Deman made these photographs by combining 2 different images and making them black and white. She makes them look so in place and out of place at the same time almost as if its meant to be.
My response
We will be using the dark room to experiment with this image further and make some dark room photos. This art was made from a city skyline and a mountain range.
Over the lessons we went into the dark room to make some constructive landscape work. Firstly we merged an image of some mountains and an image of a city skyline. After that we printed it onto acetate and then we went into the dark room. Whilst in the dark room we watched miss put the chemicals into the trays. Next we turned the red light on. After that we put out acetate on some special paper under a machine called an enlarger ,which shoots light onto the acetate. Finally we put the light exposed paper into the different chemicals for 30 seconds and then dry it for a few minutes.
Out of focus landscapes
Bill Armstrong
These photographs were made by a man called Bill Armstrong. In the photos there is a human figure in the middle, it is an out of focus picture. If i had to describe it to a person who couldn't see i would tell them that it is a blurry photo with a human figure in the middle of it. Bills photos are different to other ones i have seen because other people take photos of roads and the skyline but Bills work is unique.
Uta Barth
This work is made by Uta barth. In the photo she made an out of focus photograph of a few roads and some cars. she made these by making her camera out of focus and took a picture.
Dionne Lee's constructed landscapes
Drafts from Dionne Lee on Vimeo.
This is a video on Dionne lee making a piece of work. at first the video was very confusing because all she did was rip some paper and put it over each over like making a collage of photographs.
- In what ways is this film an example of a ‘constructed’ landscape?
- The film is an example of a constructed landscape because there is lots of different places of the world on it
- How did the artist make it?
- the artist made her work by getting various different photographs and placing them down together and ripping some of them up
- What did you like about it?
- I liked that it looks quite easy to make it and simple
- How is it similar/different to conventional (traditional, ordinary) landscape images?
- this is different to other landscape images because she adds other images to this one
- Where did the images she uses come from?
- she got the images from taking photos and pictures from newspapers
- How do you think the artist feels about landscape photographs
Minimalist landscapes
In photography we are looking at minimalist landscapes and making our own. Here is some of the examples miss had shown us.
Here is some work made by Geraldo de Barros and Liz Nielsen. I made some work to respond to what they have made i was also inspired to make some work by looking at the past students work. Firstly i cut out little shapes on a piece of paper and made a big tree in the middle a sun and a couple mountains. After this we went into the dark room and made some photograms my first one was a good one then the next one was quite blury and the image was projected on twice one fading away and the other showing more.
Dafna Talmor reasearch
Today we are researching a photographer called Dafna Talmor and she had made the image above. In the photo above i can see that its some sort of rocks and water cut on different little pieces of cut up paper. It looks like these photographs were cut by something burning them. Constructed landscapes suggest how this image was made because 2 different images of different locations were cut up and transformed to make this piece of work. An artist like this might want to piece different artworks together to explore and try to make some good photos. The reason i picked this art work to describe it is because i think its unique. I think this is unique because i have never seen any artist get multiple photos and burn the edges to combine them.
Sid Motion Gallery
Here is some of Dafna Talmor work in the Sid Motion Gallery. some of her work is different photos and cutting them up in way that you dont know what it looks like or some big rocks.
Peckham photo walk slides
Today we experimented with some pictures we took from Peckham photo walk. The pictures on top are the ones i made from printing my photos on acetate. Once the photos were printed on acetate i used coloured gel which were many different colours. On some of my work i used a scalpel to add some scratches and on one of them it looks like shattered glass.
I like this photo the most.I like this photo because its my favourite one out off all of them. This is my favourite because i like the way i made it. I made this by taking a photo of a van on our peckham photo walk. When we got back we needed to print it tiny so we could put it in the slide projector. After i made it tiny i put a little glue smudge on it and then i used a scalpel to make some scratches on it which made it look like glass . After this i stuck on a cut yellow sheet of clear plastic. Then i put it in the slide projector and it came out looking like that.
Constructed landscape minimap
In todays lesson, we created a mini mind map about the ideas of constructed landscapes and what it is.
Yi Dia
The photographer is have chosen is Yi Dia the photos that she make are a bunch of little photos being used to make a huge one. These projects must of been very time consuming because you will need to get a bunch of photos and perfectly place them in position to make a collage of photos.
Beate Gütschow
Beate takes photographs of parks and rearranges the perspective, in each of her art work she takes aboout 150 photographs of different objects such as walls, benches, floors, trees, bushes and different plants and assembles them to make the photos that she makes. During the composition process, Gütschow puts together landscape elements from different images of architectural objects in varying perspectives.
Fong Qi Wei
The words used to describe natural light are very calm they are soft morning light, dusk blue and golden hour. All these used by Fong Qi Wei to make his iconic photographs which have many layers of light taken throughout the day using a tripod that is staying in place. This process must of been quite long for her to complete it because you will need to wait all day for the different natural lights. He then drew different shapes and used different colours like dark blue orange yellow white. After all this the animation is starting to come together with the colours starting from the middle and ending at the border.
My personal response
Due to time limits. I am going to use one of my photos and alter the colours/contrast ,which is found in photoshop, so I can play with layering the photos - Trying to recreate the idea of many images being taken.
Now i have made a few photographs in response to the artist i am looking at with the picture i edited in photoshop. The photos below are the first batch i made with different colour pictures i made with photoshop.
Experimenting
In todays lesson I looked at a photographer called Serge Hamad. At first i didn't know how to make the colours go in a straight horizontal line so i started to experiment and try to figure out how to make my work look like Serge's. After i experimented with one of his photos i went on to use a photo i got from Herne bay beach, this is a rocky beach that i have went to. I have also started to combine two of my experiments together the work i made from Serge Hamad and the work i made from Fong Qi Wei.
